Earth’s Recipe

As summer is nearing the end, it means cooler weather and a drop in the humidity.  I’m slowly saying goodbye to the lightweight products that I have been slathering on all summer.  It’s time to bulk up with a heftier hydrators.  Heavy does not mean greasy.  It means finding a product with right hydrating ingredients.  Earth’s Recipe Toner, Brightening Serum and Moisturizer has been go-to skin routine.  The brand philosophy suits my pursuit to live more simply, naturally and conscious of the environment.  They use earth-friendly ingredients and never test their cosmetics on animals.  Each product is created to hydrate and illuminate the skin.  All of their products contain the brand’s secrete ingredients known as Tremella mushroom, that can hold 5X more moisture than its size, and rich in Vitamin B1, B2, D that detoxes and prevents the skin from aging.

Energy Boosting Toner – This toner is designed for nourishing and moisturizing the skin with its lineup of amazing botanical extracts with powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-wrinkle and brightening effects (japonica, licorice, soybean, orange, bergamot) The texture is light and thin, which makes it absorb into the skin quickly.  But it is so powerful in reaching the deepest layer, making my skin supple and soft.  The natural ingredients provide amazing moisture for any skin type and really keeps my skin in balance, and revealing the natural clarity and glow.  In addition it will brighten and decrease wrinkles.

Gigawhite Radiance Serum – My routine always contain a brightening serum.  This one contains some powerful ingredients: Gigawhite complex which is a blend of botanical extracts including Edelweiss, Peppermint, Veronica, Primerose and Lemon balm to improve the appearance of dark spots, promotes even skintone, and boosts radiance.  Also contains tranexamic acid, the star ingredient in one of my brand favorite Shiseido White Lucent line, that has ‘skin lightening’ effect on pigments and melasma as powerful as hydroquinone, minus the side effect.  The serum is clear, and the texture is silky and smooth.  It blends into my skin with ease and the formula is highly concentrated.  A little certain go a long way with this products.  I love the pump dispenser because it delivers the same amount of product every time.  It’s also got a lovely scent that keeps your skin smelling fresh while it moistens.

Moisture Bound Cream – Last but not least, the star product of this line.  I aboslutely love this moisturizer because I feel like it reduce the presence of fine lines by really plump and hydrate the skin.  It contains ceramides, which are the essential and healthy fatty acids that occur naturally in the skin but need to be replenished during the cooling months.  Also formulated with white jelly natural herbs that are rich in collagen and bean ferment extract and yam complex that sooth and revitalize tired skin.  This is a perfect daily moisturizer for both day and night time.  During the daytime, it has a luxuriously silky texture that spreads into a thin layer that plumps the skin for the ultimate makeup base.  At night, I apply a thicker layer to get the full benefit of intense hydration that improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and support the natural hylauronic acid.   No fragrance, none-pore clogging, and simply works to help my skin reveals radiance and brightness from within.

As if BB cushion isn’t the most perfect convenient design of makeup-skincare in one already.  Then comes a suncushion!  In my mind, this is absolute genius.  It’s a form of effortless application of sunscreen and protection throughout the day, without having to use my hand nor disrupt underlying makeup.  I have been so excited to use the LGH Sun Cream Cushion, and believe me, it does not disappointment.

First of all, it’s almost intuitive that many Korean sunscreen not only comes with good protection against UVA and UVB, it also has skin care benefits.  This one contains natural Calamine pink powder that tones up and brightens your face with a quick soothing care and relieve trouble and irritated skin.  It also contains nelumbo nucifera, which is high in moisture content, to help keep the skin hydrated and protected.  Adenosine provides additional brightening benefits, and centella and other Asian botanical extract provides superior antioxidant protection, and hydration for long lasting suppleness.

New Beauty Finds: Eleven Huesday

I’m not afraid to feature new beauty finds; but they must be worth my skin’s time in terms of ‘efficiency and effectiveness’.  In fact, Eleven Huesday does not yet have a cult following.  If you google, there are not many reviews currently in English.  What attracted me to this brand is their no-fuss three pillars of optimizing good skin, which really resonate with my skin philosophy: (1) Hydration, (2) Balance, and (3) Protection of skin barrier.  Every one of their products is carefully formulated to enhance and invigorate the health of skin, and deliver results on these three simple steps.  I’ve previously reviewed their Deep Balancing Toner, that has easily been incorporated into my daily routine.  Their ultra deep repairing serums are complexion potions that cater to some of my biggest skin-care concerns.  It comes in four specialized formulations: antioxidant/regenerating, intensive hydration, trouble care and dark spot/pigments.  The serum can be used individually depending on skin needs, or layered.  Today I will be reviewing their Antioxidant Aging Barrier and De-spot Luminosity serums.

This product is a perfect balance of moisture and effectiveness in an anti-aging serum.  The ingredients focus on preventing, masking and reducing signs of aging by improving skin hydration and regeneration to help develop a youthful skin from inside out.  Everything about a dropper dispenser make it convenient and controlled.  Two to three drops are just right amount of product I need to use to cover my face and neck.  The serum has an impressive level of light consistency that absorbs seamlessly into the skin.  There is no feeling of oiliness or stickiness once applied.  Moreover, my sense are treated with a mild floral fragrance, while this left my skin supple and hydrated.  Over the ensuing weeks of use, I have not experienced any breakouts or sensitive reaction.  The power of intense moisture has softened fine lines, and my skin feels more bouncy and firm.  The price is not a splurge and totally worthwhile the investment.

Lighten spots, and brighten skin tone no longer has to be painful, peeling nor irritating.  Hydroquinone is out and tranxemic acid is in for skin brightening and lightening.  Tranexamic acid is a protease inhibitor that rapidly suppresses the activity of tyrosinase and melanocytes. After its entry into the dermis, it increases collagen synthesis directly and inhibit the formation of melanin, making it so effective at eliminate black spots and prevents and reduces pigmentation.

While keeping the ingredients safe to the skin, this De-Spot serum is a powerful but non-irritating formula designed to diminish appearance of age spot and discoloration, all the while maintaining skin tone clarity.  Uneven complexion is my skin foes, along with the dark spot left over from my sun-bathing days and current battle of hormonal acne.  Spot and tone correctors are such key in my skin care regimen.  Unlike many ‘skin lightening’ products, this one does not irritate my skin, causing redness or dryness or burning.  If you experience these effect, it can be counter productive as excessive peeling can lead to a bigger problem: hyperpigmentation.  The formula is a perfect blend of aqueous and oil ingredients for a silky smooth application, and non-sticky absorption that nourishes the skin.  With consistent daily use, it has made a noticeable difference in correcting my skin imperfections and discolorations.  Overall my skin looks fresh and more clear, and the results just continues to get better with time.   While the main effect is treatment and prevention of spot, the product does not compromise on other factors important in maintaining skin healthy: packed with antioxidants, as well as natural hydrators, this lightweight fluid keeps my skin comfortably moisturized and protected.  This has also helped with some blemishes and speed the healing process.  I feel this gentle formulation is ideal for those with sensitive skin, yet still looking for an effective skin brightening treatment product.

You can find both of these products on Amazon for $29/30mL.

Spa treatments are so indulging.  But when I can’t find the best of times or even an hour to visit a spa to enjoy some much deserved pampering, sheet masks at home gives me a little ‘me’ time while having a good skin treatment.  Taiwanese sheet masks always have a soft spot in my heart, with My Beauty Diary easily fulfilling my vanities.

(4) What I like best about them is that they are consistently high quality, yet budget friendly.  What do I mean by high quality?

Texture/Feel: Their masks are made of tencel fibre cloth, which means microfibres are inter-weaved to allow for efficient water-bearing structure of the essence.  The tencel is ultra-thin, soft and stretchy, but so absorbable.  When the mask is wet, it is nearly translucent on the skin.  This translates to the best fitted sheet mask I’ve ever used because it literally clings to every singe surface area of my face.  I’ve left these masks up to 40 minutes at a time, and it still remains well moisturized when removed.  Each mask always comes with a white plastic backing, making it easy to disassemble and apply.

Essence: Each package contains abundant essence that are not only soaked into the mask but enough left over to treat my neck, chest, arms, legs, body et al.

Fit: I am biased on this, because I have a small-ish face.  I feel that these newest addition of MBD masks are literally designed for my face.  Every opening in the mask for the eyes, nose and mouth are in the right place, and are neither too big or small.  I love when the gentle skin around my eyes can be treated.

It’s hot where I am every day.  I don’t remember the last time I wore foundation because I just can’t stand the heaviness of foundation.  Cushions are the way to go.  As one of my favorite cushion (Troiareuke Seoul Aesthetic Cushion) comes to a halting finish, I’m desperately trying to find its replacement.  The Lapothicell cushion provides a slightly lighter coverage but it is one of the most natural coverages I’ve ever seen.

The texture is creamy and the coverage is just heavy enough to hide my imperfections (scars, brown spots, redness) and light enough to feel weightless on the skin, giving it a bright, fresh looking skin.  I feel that this cushion provides a lot more brightening effect compared to others, and the finish is semi-matte with a glow-from-within finish rather than super dewy.  It’s not ashy or pale, just very complementing to my skin tone.   I find some makeup tend to fill in pores or settle into lines and dry spot, this one seems to provide a primer effect where the pores are smoothed and blended seamlessly; and provide moisture to dry patches so it doesn’t appear cakey.  The wear is fabulous on this cushion.  It lasts on me for at least 6-8 hours, and does not smudge.  Also there is definitely sebum control power here, as I don’t feel much oilness of my skin creeping up even towards the end of the day.

If you want that natural ‘no-makeup’ makeup LOOK and FEEL, I highly recommend this cushion.  It comes in two shades, 21 and 23, and I picked 21, which is an excellent match for my NC 15 skin tone.  The quality of the product is beyond my expectations:  Light weight formulation, comfortable on the skin, light to medium coverage, long wearability, and added skin care benefits.

You can find this on Amazon or for $32.

Now, have you heard of stem cell facials?  It sounds intriguing and so enticing and unfortunately oh-so-expensive as well.  When I heard about Beautigenix sheetmasks and their main ingredient is stem cells, I have to give it a try and create my own experience with a stem cell facial at home.  What is the hype about stem cells and skin care?

Stem cells are incredibly unique as they have the potential to transform into any cell types by stimulating growth of new cells and encourage production of fundamental building blocks of skin such as collagen and elastin, as well as repair of damaged cell.  Stem cells have been the heat of research for scientists and in medicine for these regenerative and reparative properties.   The philosophy behind stem cell facial is regeneration of skin cells.  Aging causes loss of collagen and elastin; sun and environment causes damages to cells result in laxity in skin, wrinkles, loss of radiance and formation of pigments, spots, scars and uneven skin tone.  It is hoped that with properly formulated stem cells, they can get incorporated into your skin, revitalize the skin’s building blocks, and help to stimulate epidermal stem cells to thicken the skin, which leads to tightening, firming and prevent wrinkle formation.

  • A brightening, pigment reducing sheet mask

  • With state-of-the-art breakthrough stem cell technology, stem cells are blended with botanical extracts to help counteract visible signs of aging, including the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dehydration, dullness, and sagging.

Beautigenix recommend that these sheet masks be used regularly two to three times weekly to get the most benefits.  I have been using these mask right after I do an at-home chemical peel, and these are the perfect skin soother to help heal and repair after the treatment.  These masks feel heavy because the material is simply supercharged with the serum, slowly delivered into the skin over the course of 20-30 minutes.  I feel that masks that are highly absorptive often contours to the face better, and really enhances moisture retention.

My favourite part of this sheet mask is massaging the serum onto my face after the mask is removed.  The serum is like a lightweight oil blending serum (perhaps due to castor oil) that really contribute to a luxury experience.  I can just see and feel that the serum has penetrated the skin, and provides instant replenishing the skin with essential moisture and create a moisture barrier for skin brightening.  It feels so light on the skin, and absorbs quickly without leaving sticky or greasy feel, which makes it a perfect mask treatment for daytime look – even under makeup or sunscreen.

I do feel that this mask produces results above and beyond what I usually expect of a facial mask.  It is of professional quality, after all!   It is unbelievably good at boosting the moisture levels in my skin, and the result is the longest lasting effect of all the masks I’ve used, while maintaining a stable skincare routine.  I feel like I just had a proper facial, with skin feeling consistently soft, plump, and looking more radiant for days.  The mask packs hydrating, plumping, and brightening punch that I feel is above its price tag with its hero ingredient: stem cell.  I can definitely see myself using this mask on a regular basis.

You can find this on Amazon ($28/single, or $220/tens) or by locating a spa near you at

Ocean-Based Retinol: Simplicity Skincare’s Dual Pump

There is no magic bullet for perfect skin. But retinol comes pretty close.  I kind of jumped at the opportunity to try this ‘ocean-based’ retinol product.   I truly believe everyone can benefit from a little bit of retinol on the skin.  In fact, it is the only clinically proven ingredients in anti-aging for fine lines and wrinkles, and reverses sun damage and improve overall skin tone and texture.  It can also help to manage large pores and acne.  I am a bit of a retinol newbie.  I have tried prescription tretinoin, and even at the lowest percentage, I was experiencing flaking and redness and really have to back off on all my other skin care products.  Then I read somewhere perhaps plant based retinol product can be a little better tolerated.  The Simplicity Skincare’s Dual Pump has ocean botanical based retinol as one of its key ingredients.  Read on for my thoughts!

“Dual Chamber Delivers the highest quality anti-aging peptide moisturizer and hyaluronic serum”

“72% organic”

“The results are deep cellular rejuvenation, wrinkle repair, reduction in inflammation and intense hydration curing dry skin in days”

“Stimulate collagen and elastin, support healing and repair, increase skin thickness, refine wrinkles, evens skin tone and texture, and restores elasticity and firmness to the skin”

Chamber 1: Superior serum – hyaluronic acid serum packed with peptides

Chamber 2: Peptide Moisture – ocean based retinol, Matrixyl 3000, tripeptide

Ocean based retinol = crithmum maritimum extract, known Sea Fennel Extract.  It is often considered a plant alternative to Retinol.  It is considered advantageous to synthetic retinol or derivatives as our body or skin tend to process and integrate natural counterpart better.  Sea Fennel, which is lush with radiance-delivering sea-minerals, vitamins A, C, E, amino acid peptides, pigments and polyphenols, can effectively stimulate skin renewal and boost collagen and elastin, similar to retinol.

No detectable scent

Simply place one pump of each product on fingertip, mix and apply.  Use both morning and night for best results.

This is my first time using a dual pump product, and certainly it’s a great way to maintain integrity of each product individually while getting benefits when the products are mixed.  It is an airless bottle to avoid bacterial contamination and oxidation.

The Serum (clear) contains hyalruonic acid and peptide amino acids and that are designed to rev up collagen production to make skin appear plumper.  The Moisturizer contains ocean-based retinol, along with amazing organic ingredients from botanical (licorice, green tea, bearberry, blueberry, cranberry), pure plant oils (avocado, rosehip, flaxseed),  and organic vitamins and minerals that moisturize and hydrate the skin.  I think this is actually a great middle ground if you find retinol products too harsh on its own.  I find the product is light yet moisturizing enough, fast absorbed and does not leave residue.  In terms of anti-aging claims, this will require longer usage to see results.  However, it seems to delivers the benefits of retinol without redness, itching and flaking that normally come with it!  This may be a great product for someone who is new to retinoid, as it is gentle on my most sensitive skin.

The ingredient list is pretty impressive, see below for full review.

A little COSDNA analysis showed that the Superior Serum is actually not too bad.  With the exception of jojoba oil which is rated as a 2 in ‘acne’ and ‘irritant’ category.   It is however low on the ingredient list.  Personally I have many products containing jojoba oil with skin benefits without being comedogenic.

The Peptide Moisture ingredient list is pretty impressively long.  There are a few that are identified to be irritants or comedogenic rated as 2-4, lower down on the list.  Many different types of alcohol are recognized as well, which likely transforms to faster drying time of the product but can be irritating.

However please be aware that an ingredient may be comedogenic on its own and might not be comedogenic in a product or on skin.  I’ve also tried products that contains no comedogenic ingredients and still found it be irritating to the skin.  I use COSDNA as a guide only. I always do patch testing to see the real results on my own skin.

I am so impressed with all three of Cy Lab masks. They are simple comfortable on the skin and provides the instant results I am looking for from a mask: improving complexion, brighten and even skin tone, added hydration and suppleness. The ingredient lists are short yet powerful, contains only non-nonsense or fillers, and gentle for sensitive skin. These are definitely a repurchase in my books.
